Jeff Muratoh was born into a family of modest social standing and average wealth, residing in Zone Q of Capital City. Despite their unremarkable position, there was an air of mystery surrounding Jeff’s family, hinting at an underlying significance that set them apart.
From an early age, Jeff exhibited traits that distinguished him from other children. His father marveled at his uncanny ability to learn. Remarkably, Jeff mastered walking simply by observing his family members, without any formal practice. This innate aptitude was a clear sign of his extraordinary potential, even in his earliest years.
At the age of six, Jeff’s life took a pivotal turn when he moved to the countryside to live with his grandmother. The rural environment was a stark contrast to the bustling city life he had known, presenting a new set of challenges. The harsh conditions of the countryside played a crucial role in fortifying Jeff’s resilience. The exposure to different surroundings helped him develop a robust immunity to various illnesses, shaping his health and adaptability.
Despite the drastic change in his environment, Jeff continued to live an ostensibly normal life. Yet, the seeds of his exceptional nature were already being sown, marking the beginning of a journey that would be far from ordinary. The countryside, with its trials and tribulations, became the crucible in which Jeff’s unique abilities were forged, setting the stage for the remarkable path that lay ahead.
At age seven, Jeff attended Majoriese Jussian Elementary School. His life in the countryside was great and fun until the fourth grade. One morning, as they attended class, everyone in his class—and even other children—began to exhibit supernatural abilities.
According to the news, the explosion of two supernovas caused rifts in several parts of the universe, resulting in a phenomenon where children under ten years old gained supernatural abilities. The government quickly enforced the Supernatural Research and Studies for the Gifted program, registering children and their abilities before they could become a threat to humanity.
Despite all this, Jeff showed no signs of abilities. Living enviously, he turned a blind eye and a deaf ear, pretending not to care. This event didn’t only affect Jeff but extended to other children who were not gifted.
As time passed, the gifted children began forming groups, bullying and threatening the ungifted. Jeff observed that even at an early age, humans were capable of inflicting pain on others. They started by following orders, but over time, they found joy in tormenting others. However, there were also gifted individuals who stood against their peers, protecting the giftless and striving to maintain peace.
Jeff graduated by laying low and playing it safe, navigating the treacherous waters of a world divided by supernatural abilities. He watched as the battle between the oppressors and the protectors unfolded, shaping his understanding of human nature and the complexities of power.
Jeff continued his academic life at TG National High School in the countryside. In high school, the gifted students were even more ruthless. They formed factions, recruiting other gifted students. Some offered shelter to the ungifted but demanded what they called a “protection tax.” The ungifted found themselves hiding at the edges of bathrooms and corners of gates, waiting to go home to escape the surrounding dangers. Some didn’t return the next day. Despite being powerless, Jeff developed a natural deterrence, blending into the crowd and not attracting any attention.
Jeff did a remarkable job of blending in, as if he orchestrated how to hide his presence in the middle of a pack of gorillas. One day, he left the classroom to get some food and encountered someone being mugged at the vending machine. He hid and observed but couldn’t ignore the situation. After the mugger walked away, Jeff approached and offered to help, only to find an unfamiliar woman with a rebellious jacket and attitude. He bought her a warm drink before returning to the classroom.
The next day, two of the muggers lost their left and right legs and were unable to attend class. The teacher explained that they had both been in an accident at a construction site where metal debris had crushed their legs.
After a while, the bell rang, and the woman Jeff had encountered at the vending machine suddenly appeared and said, “I saw what you did there,” before disappearing.
Jeff returned home to do his assignment. He looked out the window and was surprised to see a child hanging upside-down. He closed the curtains and peeked again, but there was nothing there. He turned around to stretch and was shocked to see the child sitting on his bed.
